The University of Montevallo’s homecoming tradition, called College Night, is a coeducational competition in which students can choose to represent the school colors, the Purple Square or the Gold Square. The tradition of College Night began as a celebration of the Alabama Woman’s Technical Institute’s renaming to Alabama College. The event was first held on March 3, 1919, as a game between four classes. “Now that our school is going to be a college, we’re going to try some college stunts,” said the Class of 1919.

College Night’s main event is a performance of a musical production written by both teams. These productions are written, directed, produced, and performed by the student contestants. The competition now also includes four sports events: men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, and men’s ultimate Frisbee.

In 1921, to commemorate AGTI’s 25th anniversary, College Night was no longer a game between classes, but became a game between the Purple and Gold teams.

In 2000, the Library of Congress declared College Night a “local heritage” and exhibited recordings of Purple and Gold songs, photos, College Night playbills, and other artifacts.
